Iceland - 17 million years ago, violent eruptions formed the island in the North Atlantic - with rugged mountains, countless waterfalls and 200 volcanoes. Land mammals are few and far between. Around 10,000 years ago, the first polar foxes came to Iceland, floating on ice floes. Filmmaker Tobias Mennle follows the foxes for two years and shows rare insights into their family life.It was only a good 1,000 years ago that the famous Icelandic horses arrived on the island on board Norwegian Viking ships. In the meantime, the original horse breed is strictly protected. Iceland is also famous for its seabird colonies. Kittiwakes, puffins and thick-billed murres breed in steep cliffs.
