After the death of her father, gentle Marie lives with her domineering stepmother and her spoiled daughter Flora in a secluded mountain hut. She is bullied and abused as a maid for all the menial tasks. It is Christmas Eve, and the brother of Marie's companion "Näschen" returns to the village from the wide world - Karl has become rich in a foreign country and is therefore the ideal groom for all the girls who admire and pester him.
