2 p.m. in the holy city. A normal spring afternoon in Jerusalem. Like hardly any other city in the world, Jerusalem is full of contrasts. But in these many contrasting stories, one commonality can be found: Flight and expulsion have played a major role in the lives of many of the city's residents. In the spring, Jewish Israelis celebrate Independence Day to commemorate the founding of the state in 1948. Those killed in the wars that took place shortly before the founding of the state and since then are also remembered. Palestinians commemorate prisoners in Israeli jails with their "Day of the Prisoners." An Israeli intelligence chief once said, "The heroes of some are the terrorists of others." A young school dropout in the Palestinian refugee camp of Shuafat meets with friends. A brother remembers his sister, who died in an Al-Aqsa Brigades attack March 9, 2002, at his parents' home. UN officer Christoph von Toggenburg investigates violent clashes in refugee camps. Today he has been called to Aida, a camp near Bethlehem and in the immediate vicinity of the wall that separates Jerusalem from the West Bank. Many survivors of the Shoah still live in Jerusalem. With age, repressed memories come back. Palestinians remember the day they had to leave their homes. In the desert outside the city, Bedouins fight for their right to stay. Jerusalem, this magical melting pot - much unites the people, but even more divides them. The wall snakes massively through the city and shapes the image. Since it was built, there have been fewer terrorist attacks. And people ask: Because of the wall or in spite of it?
